Arrival in Cam Binh island village ( Cam Ranh Town), it is easy to realize the prosperity and the density of an island area. It was started in 2000 when the local people chose the lobster to be the farmed object for the decrease of hunger and poverty.
Cam Binh village currently has 3 hamlets (Binh Ba, Binh An and Binh Hung) with 1,087 households, 5,078 inhabitants. The local people’s life has essentially depended on the two main occupations which are catching seafood and farming lobster. However, seafood catching has got lots of difficulties for recent tens of years owing to the increase of catching expenditures while the price of complete product got decreasing, consumption unstable. In that situation, lobster farming has been considered as the best way to decrease the hunger and poverty, improving the local people’s life.
The movement of farming lobster in Cam Binh island village was started in 2000 with about 60 households, test-farming 40 cages. These households mainly learned the experiences from other areas and then applied for themselves. The results which they gained were over their expectation. In the first season, there was household getting great success with profit of tens million of dong after subtracting all expenditures. From then on, other households also applied the same way. The moment of farming lobster in Cam Binh was really popular; the highest point was in 2006 – 2007 with 1,200 lobster cages. At that time, over 90% of the households possessed cages and crafts farming lobster. Mr. Tran Van Hoa – President of Commune Committee stated: “Cam Binh is an island in less wind area, rarely influenced by storms; food source is rich, guaranteed quality as it is not brought from other places. Also, conditions of the water environment and the flow are suitable with farming seafood, especially lobster.” Thanks to lobster’s development, the life of people in Cam Binh has been improved, many households are becoming really rich. After subtracting expenditures, the people in Cam Binh earned the income from farming lobster in the over past years with the profit of tens million of dong at least. There were also many households earning averagely hundreds million of dong annually such as households of Mr. Ngo Minh Phuong, Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan Phong, Ms. Dang Thi Thuy Van ( Binh Ba hamlet), Mr. Nguyen Van Lan, Mr. Bui Ngoc, Mr. Dao Van Luom ( Binh Hung hamlet). These households got the annual profit from 200 to 400 million dong. More and more solid and spacious houses arisen on the island, over 80% of the roads covered with asphalt. With the development of the economy, the security and order on the island have also been guaranteed; the parents have taken good care of their children’s study.
Although the lobster has brought about the great change for the people in Cam Binh, there are still something which should be done so that this farming area will be no longer in the spontaneously developing status as present, which results in regretful effects for an example of epidemic disease of 2007. Mentioning about this matter, Mr. Hoa stated: “At present, we set up the plan of farming shrimp with more sustainable development. The commune takes the initiative in inviting the cadres of Fisheries Encouragement Centre, Fisheries Source Protection Branch, etc. to instruct the farmers how to take care for, treat and protect the shrimp; to enhance the awareness of the farmers. Besides, we advise farmers to keep the right distance of 50-100m between the crafts to preserve the hygiene of farming environment.”
At present, the movement of farming shrimp in Cam Binh is somewhat coming off, but there are totally over 800 farming households in the village. With the current selling price, many households believe that they will gain another greatly successful season. Mr. Nguyen Van Dau – the owner of an shrimp craft said: “With the quick growth of the shrimp as present, I may sell some within over 2 months. Subtracting all expenditures, it is possible to gain the profit of 100 million dong.”
Though shrimp farming in Cam Binh has sometimes ups and downs, in generally the lobster has indeed helped the local people a lot on the way to defeat the poverty, getting over to enrich legally.
